Red Birthday Purse for Bee

“As the purse is emptied, the heart is filled.”  – Victor Hugo.

I’ve been wanting to practice making a purse cake. I’ve been seeing it online, and it look so real and edible. I was so tempted to make one, but who’s going to celebrate it? After all, it’s a celebration cake. So around a month ago, Aldy asked our friend, Bee, about making a birthday cake for her. We decided to make her a red purse cake and we’re confident she would be very happy celebrating birthday in her Cozy Restaurant.

Base

For the base of the cake, I wrapped cardboard boxes with gift wrap papers and attached several photographs taken from quote decorations inside the Cozy Restaurant. Then for the upper base, I colored the fondant to look like woods that would hopefully match the wood color of Cozy Restaurant tables.

Cake1

For this cake, I use chocolate cake with milk chocolate cream frosting between the cake layers and Italian meringue buttercream frosting to frost the cake before the fondant.

Cake2

I use the red color widely available from local art stores that I’ve been comfortable to work with all this time. I actually tried to make the red color from vanilla fondant, but it didn’t turn out the deep red I intended to make, so I just gave in to the store red fondant. And to knead around 6 pounds of fondant for this project, hmmm…. I had Aldy as my assistant kneader, because my tiny hands just gave up.

Again, time and organization are very important in the process of making this cake because I also work full time. It would be a luxury if my hobby is my full time job! Anyhow, here is my very first red purse for our friend….
